Nathalie Gosselin

Associate Professor
Department of Psychology
Université de Montréal

Nathalie Gosselin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences of the Université de Montréal. She is also a neuropsychologist and directs the Research Laboratory on Music, Emotions, and Cognition (MUSEC Laboratory).

Her primary interest is in the effects of music on cognition, mood, health, and stress, both in individuals with neuropsychological disorders or mental health issues and in those without neurological or psychiatric disorders. Her studies examining the impacts of background music on cognition are funded by the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Société et culture (FQRSC New Researcher Establishment). Professor Gosselin's projects exploring the effect of music on stress are funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC Insight Development). Lastly, her research on the effect of music on post-traumatic agitation in patients with traumatic brain injury is funded by the Consortium for Trauma Research (AERDPQ, AQESSS, FRQS, MSSS, REPAR, SAAQ).

Nathalie Gosselin's work with brain-injured adults has led to a better understanding of the brain's organization in recognizing musical emotions. She has notably demonstrated the key role of the amygdala in the perception of fear evoked by music. She also studies emotional processing across domains, including music, voice, and faces. Her postdoctoral research focused on the perception of emotions evoked by music, faces, and voice in patients with Alzheimer's-type dementia.
