Sylvie Hamel is a full professor at the Department of Computer Science and Operations Research of the University of Montreal’s Arts and Science Faculty.

Her research work is situated between computer science and maths with its applications in molecular biology. More precisely, she is interested to algorithmic problems tied with data analysis coming from the sequencing and the efficient research of words and motifs, the rearrangement of genes and more recently, the protein folding in an aqueous environment. She is also interested in theoretical computer science research, combinatorics on words and algebraic combinatorics research.

Her research domain is on bio-informatic, theory of languages and automating, combinatorics on words, Macdonald polynomials and symmetry functions.
