Stéphane Potvin is a Full Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Addiction, and holds the Eli Lilly Canada Chair in Schizophrenia Research.

His work in functional neuroimaging spans the entire spectrum of psychosis, including young people at risk of psychosis, individuals experiencing their first psychotic episode, and those with treatment-resistant schizophrenia. His functional neuroimaging research has validated, in adults, the aberrant salience hypothesis of psychosis, which remains one of the most influential hypotheses in the field. In the context of the legalization of cannabis in Canada in 2018, Dr. Potvin is currently studying the effects of this substance on the brain function of adults with psychotic disorders. He is also conducting research to identify the biological bases involved in aggressive behaviors in individuals with and without associated psychotic disorders.

More recently, Dr. Potvin has launched a bold study using functional neuroimaging to elucidate the mechanisms of action of Avatar therapy. This innovative virtual reality therapy offers tangible benefits to people experiencing persistent verbal hallucinations.

Dr. Potvin's research is funded by multiple grants from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Fonds de Recherche du Québec, and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council.
